As exciting as planning a road trip can be, don’t let the anticipation distract you from considering essential details such as your license.

This article covers everything you need to drive legally in New Zealand, so you’ll be ready to hit the road in an Escape Rentals campervan.

Can I drive in New Zealand without a New Zealand driver’s license?

Yes, you’re good to go as long as:

  • Your license is written in English
  • You’re staying in NZ for less than 12 months
  • Your license is current, and you haven’t been suspended from driving

If your driver’s license is non-English, you just need to get an English translation of your license via:

  • The authority that issued you your license.
  • A diplomatic representative at a high commission, consulate, or embassy.
  • An approved NZTA translator.

Alternatively, you can apply for an International Driving Permit (IDP). As this permit is issued following the United Nations Convention on Road Traffic, New Zealand will accept this as an approved translation.

Remember: An IDP is simply a translation of your license, not the license itself. You still need to carry your official driver’s license at all times for your translation to be valid.

What vehicles can I drive in NZ on my overseas license?

When you hold a current and valid overseas driver’s license, you can drive the vehicles listed under the equivalent New Zealand driving class.

Here’s what that means for driving cars and campervans:

  • Class 1 (car): Drive vehicles up to 6000kg, including Escape Rentals campervans.
  • Learner, restricted, or provisional licenses have weight restrictions and may exclude you from driving an Escape Rentals campervan.

And for motorcycles:

  • Class 6 (motorcycle): Ride any size motorcycle.
  • Learner, restricted, or provisional licenses are restricted to approved motorcycles.

What if I plan to stay for more than 12 months?

Each time you visit for less than 12 months, you can continue to use your valid overseas license for another 12 months.

If your holiday is over 12 months, you must apply for a New Zealand driver’s license or convert your current one.

You can do so by contacting a New Zealand driver licencing agent.

Once you’re granted a New Zealand driver’s license, your overseas driver’s license will no longer be valid for driving in New Zealand.

Do I need to sit a test to drive in NZ?

You don’t have to sit a test if your driver’s license is currently valid OR recently expired (up to 12 months ago), and from one of the following countries:

  • Australia
  • Austria
  • Belgium
  • Canada
  • Denmark
  • Finland
  • France
  • Germany
  • Greece
  • Hong Kong
  • Ireland
  • Italy
  • Japan
  • Luxembourg
  • Netherlands
  • Norway
  • Portugal
  • South Africa
  • South Korea
  • Spain
  • Sweden
  • Switzerland
  • UK
  • USA

If your license is from a country not listed above, you must pass both the theory and practical tests before receiving your new license.

Each test will have a fee, which you can find out more on the NZTA fee chart.

Do I always have to carry my license with me?

In New Zealand, it’s a legal requirement for all drivers to carry their license when on the road. As a result, whenever you’re driving, you’ll need to carry your current local license and your IDP or valid translation.

What happens if I don’t have a valid driver license in New Zealand?

If you’re caught without your license and the necessary translation, you risk:

  • Receiving an NZ$400 infringement fee.
  • Receiving fines of up to NZ$1,000 if you’re summoned to court.
  • Having an insurance claim declined.
  • Being forbidden to drive until you have the correct documentation.
  • Driving prohibition until documentation is in order.

If you continue to drive after being banned, your vehicle may be impounded for 28 days.

It’s your responsibility to pay for infringement fees, fines, or impound costs while driving in New Zealand.

Should I learn the New Zealand road rules?

Before beginning your road trip, you need to know the New Zealand road rules.

We provide a handbook when you collect your campervan, but it’s best to familiarise yourself with the NZ Road Code before you arrive.

You can even test your knowledge using a practice quiz to be confident about taking on the kiwi roads.
